Don,
Thank you for putting together such a wonderful website.
As a native New Yorker and radio news junkie, WCBS 880
has been a part of my life from the very beginning. It
was fun to hear the old news sounders I remember from
the 70's - and personally, I still like them better
than the current jingle. Deep in my archive of
childhood things I have cassette tapes of myself as a
little boy reading the news from the paper and saying,
"and now, CBD covers the world at five..."
I also have a request for you that I hope you'll be able to help with.
Back in 1972 I was nearly involved in the crash of
Eastern Air Lines Flight 401. Fortunately, we changed
flights and missed what turned out to be the first
crash of a 'jumbo jet.' The reporter in me became
interested in the accident and many years later I put
up a website about the accident. You can see the site
at http://eastern401.googlepages.com
I have been looking for any archival recordings of
radio news reporting of the event. I was able to
uncover a clip of a Mutual News broadcast taken from a
Washington DC station, but I'd love to hear how it was
reported in my beloved NY.
The date of the crash was December 29, 1972 at
11:42pm, with most of the news breaking the following
morning. Do you have in your archives a recording from
WCBS of this story?
Thanks,
-Peter Weingard
